Why Forensics
People, especially investigators, have been looking for ways to prove how an event occurred, beyond rumor and the occasional eyewitness, since the first fingerprints were used in the 19th century. Forensic science has since evolved to include things such as finger and palm prints, footwear, blood spatter, fiber analysis, physical matching of objects back to the scene, ballistics, chemical analysis, hair comparisons and DNA. That is just a start of what Forensic science can do.
As the forensic discipline grew so did the methodology. The scientific method is employed to determine what is accurate and what is assumption or guesswork. A theory of an event is determined. Then testing is performed to show if the theory works and if the event can be repeated. Research is conducted to make sure other causes are ruled out. Finally the theory is presented to someone else to confirm or refute.
It is the scientific method of analyzing forensic evidence that makes it so valuable in solving crimes and determining what occurred during an event. The evidence has no agenda or opinion and, if processed properly, will be more accurate than an eyewitness account. However, mishandled evidence can be just as powerful and potentially damaging.
The population of Canada is heavily influenced by all the podcasts, books, movies, and TV shows that solve various crimes, often in 30 minutes. People often refer to the “CSI effect” and it is a very real thing. Unfortunately the CSI and NCIS shows are not particularly realistic. Most of the things shown on these shows are possible; but do not have the success rate portrayed, or the hard and fast assumptions made by the characters. This has increased the expectations of the general public and does not follow the scientific method.
Our goal at Canadian Forensic Consulting Incorporated (CFCI) is to decipher the forensic evidence, in which we are experts, and provide our clients with a clear report on what the evidence means. This may provide the results you, as the client, expect or may have other results, either way we let the forensic evidence do the talking.
