About us
Shane Coughlan, owner and director of Canadian Forensic Consulting Incorporated, has a vision of providing forensic knowledge and expert opinions and advice to clients.
Shane grew up in the trades and then spent four years as a wildland firefighter in British Columbia. He then joined the police and gained nineteen years of policing experience with ten of those specializing in forensics and crime scene examination. Shane trained as a Forensic Identification Officer at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa. This included training in forensic scene examinations, scene photography, latent fingerprint and footwear detection and proper collection and comparison of evidence found. Shane later trained with the National Association of Fire Investigators to obtain a certification in fire and explosion investigation and training.
Shane furthered his education and knowledge by obtaining a bachelor's degree in Forensic Identification, which included a certificate in fire investigation, from Laurentian University located in Ontario.
In 2011 Shane founded a new fingerprint development technique to help investigators better visualize fingerprints on notes and other written materials. Shane completed the required scientific experimentation to prove consistency and repeatability and had the process published in 2012 in the International Association of Identification’s publication, the Journal of Forensic Identification. This enabled all members of the forensic community access to this process. In 2013 Shane received the International Association of Chiefs of Police August Vollmer Excellence in Forensic Service Award. Shane’s CV is available upon request.
Shane wants to share his expertise with clients through consultation on a variety of topics to determine, in a non-biased manner, the accuracy and validity in the methodology used and determinations made. Shane can apply this knowledge to various processes including fire investigations, fingerprint examinations, palm print examinations, footwear comparisons, physical matching, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) collection and general scene evaluations using photographs.
